Joe Biden’s Rude, Coded Curses – What Does Let’s Go Brandon Mean?

A coded, vulgar slogan is widely used in USA in recent weeks, appearing on stadiums or on a helmet and has spread to the seats of Congress in Washington. All Americans know that “Let’s Go Brandon” means “Fuck You Biden”.

The vulgar expression spread rapidly in a highly polarized country, demonstrating the degeneration of the political debate in the post-Donald Trump era. It also reflects the fall in popularity of his successor in the White House.

Where do these three words come from? Simply from a local interview with a racing driver, Brandon Brown: having won a Nascar Cup race in Alabama, the 28-year-old pilot answered questions from an NBC reporter on October 2. Raising her voice to cover the commotion from the spectators’ stands, the journalist says: “And you can hear the voices of the crowd: ‘Forward Brandon!’ (Let’s Go Brandon) ».

In fact, the crowd can be heard shouting “Fuck You Biden!” (“Biden, ante c.”).

The slogan went viral

The mistake of the journalist, who may not have heard well, combined with the bliss of young Brandon, was enough to make the scene viral. And the slogan “Let’s Go Brandon” became an easy and gentle way of conveying it Joe Biden, without having to say “F. word “, the vulgar word that is usually forbidden in the proper speech.

So in recent weeks one has seen front-line Republican politicians repeating that expression and condemning the Democratic camp.

Among those officials is Florida’s very “trumpeted” governor Ron Desandis, who some already believe will win the 2024 presidential election, according to AFP and the Athens News Agency.

In a speech in West Palm Beach, the city where Donald Trump has retired to Mar-A-Lago, his luxury club, Desadis spoke out against the “Brandon administration”.

Desandis simply followed other conservative Republicans, who helped bring the abusive slogan out of the far right and gain some form of acceptance.

Masks, T-shirts…

South Carolina MP Jeff Duncan made a sensation by wearing a “Let’s Go Brandon” mask in the House of Representatives. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott wrote the phrase on Twitter. Senator Ted Cruz, another prominent Republican, posed behind a banner reading “Let’s Go Brandon.”

For Trump militant supporters, “Let’s Go Brandon” T-shirts are available in all sizes and colors, even with the American flag in the background.

At the end of a flight from Houston to Albuquerque, a Southwest Airline pilot repeated the obscene words in his message to the passengers. Shortly afterwards, the airline condemned his “unacceptable” behavior and launched an internal investigation.

Sports authorities, especially academics, are watching the phenomenon with concern. The slogan is heard in many stadiums and other sports venues in the United States, especially in Nascar races, which attract an audience of white and popular backgrounds.

On Friday, Nascar chief Steve Phelps warned that his organization would not tolerate seeing its logo associated with the insult that has spoiled people.

And on Saturday night, the divisive slogan crossed another celebrity milestone as he made a fanfare appearance on Saturday night Live’s YouTube channel, the major political satire show.

On the part of President Biden’s supporters, the answer took the form of irony, with the hashtag #ThankYouBrandon (“Thank you Brandon”).
