A federal jury has convicted the US president’s son, Hunter Biden, of all three federal counts of illegal gun possession, concluding that he violated laws designed to prevent drug addicts from owning firearms.
The conviction marks the first time a president’s immediate family member has been found guilty of a crime during his father’s term, although his crimes predate Joe Biden’s term as president.
The jury found him guilty on all three counts, which stemmed from his October 2018 purchase of a handgun at a Delaware gun store. The first two charges were for lying about drug use on a federal background check form; and the third charge was for possession of a weapon while addicted to or using illegal drugs.
Hunter Biden could face up to 25 years in prison and be required to pay a fine of up to $750,000 at sentencing, although he would likely receive much less than the maximum since he is a first-time offender.
“We do not expect him to be detained pending sentencing. It is unclear how long it will take for him to get his sentencing date, which will likely be set today,” said the legal correspondent for CNN Paula Reid.
First lady Jill Biden arrived at the courthouse minutes after the verdict was announced.
