Evidence and other evidence of alleged war crimes in Ukraine after the Russian invasion should be collected from refugees fleeing the country so that they do not go unpunished, European Home Affairs Commissioner Elva Johansson said today.
“We have all seen the pictures, the videos from the results of the war crimes. And unfortunately I think we will see more,” he said during a press conference from Prague, which he gave together with Czech Interior Minister Wit Rakuzan.
“It is very important that these war crimes do not go unpunished,” he said.
More than 4.3 million Ukrainians have fled their homes since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, with most entering the EU via Poland. More than 300,000 refugees have arrived in the Czech Republic.
Johansson said it was necessary for people to gather evidence of war crimes “in order to prosecute”.
