THE crisis of the technology industry John McAfee spent the last hours alone in his cell, in a Spanish prison, puzzled by the recent decision to extradite him to the US to stand trial for tax evasion accused by the US State.
John McAfee: The last hours of the eccentric tycoon’s life in prison

The 75-year-old antivirus software mogul complained to prison officials that he was not feeling well. He was in bad shape, he told them, and he was afraid that he will spend the rest of his life behind bars, according to the exclusive report of the Spanish newspaper El Pais.
Around 4:00 on Wednesday afternoon, he was asked to return to his cell, which was empty at the time, his inmate had not yet returned. Two hours later, prison guards found him hanging in the cell, in what appeared to be suicide.
Prison officials in Barcelona said they did not consider McAfee likely to commit suicide, so they did not monitor him on a 24-hour basis.
“We were the first to be surprised,” one of the guards told El Pais.

THE eccentric tycoon was in jail from Barcelona on 4 October and was considered a model prisoner. He was “a prisoner for financial crimes with a completely normal life,” a prison source told the Spanish newspaper.
McAfee had asked a Spanish court not to extradite him to the US, as the Tennessee prosecutor’s office was waiting for him there, accusing him in 2020 of tax evasion. According to El Pais, he asked not to be extradited for humanitarian reasons, claiming that his health was fragile and that he was suffering from “serious health problems”.
On Wednesday morning, however, he learned that he would be sent to America. When he went to his cell, he still had the court documents in his hands.
