Johnny Depp testifies again this Monday; know what he said so far

The actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are in a contentious defamation trial in a court in Virginia, in the United States, with proceedings scheduled to resume this Monday (25)

Depp is suing Heard, his ex-wife, for $50 million over a 2018 op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post, in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”

Although the actor was not named in the article, he claims it cost him lucrative film roles.

Both Heard and Depp, who met in 2009 and were married from 2015 to 2016, accuse each other of acts of physical violence during their relationship. Both denied the allegations.

The former couple divorced in August 2016, releasing a statement signed by both that read, in part, “Our relationship was intensely passionate and sometimes volatile, but always bound by love.”

The trial, which began on April 11, is expected to last six weeks. Heard has not yet testified.

Johnny Depp began his deposition on April 19 and is expected to continue to be questioned by Heard’s lawyer on Monday.

Check out below what came out during the actor’s testimony so far.

frequent fights

Heard claimed in 2016 that Depp was “verbally and physically abusive” to her, according to a complaint she filed that year, alleging that Depp injured his face after throwing a phone at her at her Los Angeles home.

Depp has denied the allegation and has not been charged with any crime.

The actor claimed during his testimony last Tuesday that the couple argued often, but said, “I never got to the point of hitting Ms. Heard no way, I have never hit any woman in my life.”

Audio recordings of some of their heated conversations were played back in court, including one where Heard hits Depp during an argument.

“You didn’t get punched; you got hit. I’m sorry I hit you like that, but I didn’t punch you,” Heard reportedly said.

Laurel Anderson, a clinical psychologist who worked with Depp and Heard in 2015 as a marriage counselor, testified in a video shown in court on April 14 that Heard told her he “fought back” after Depp became a physicist. Anderson said the former couple “engaged in mutual abuse.”

Depp also stated that he physically defended himself at times, talking about an incident where Heard said his nose was hurt. Depp said in court that his head connected with Heard’s forehead as he tried to “contain” Heard. “There was no intentional headbutt,” the actor said.

a cut finger

Depp testified that his finger was cut by broken glass in 2015 after Heard allegedly threw a bottle of vodka at him. The actor sought medical attention but claimed in court that at the time he told others that he had injured his finger knocking on a door.

“I didn’t want to reveal that it was Ms. Heard who threw a bottle of vodka at me,” he said during his testimony. “I didn’t want to get her in trouble. I just tried to keep things as quick and easy as possible for everyone.”

Depp said he underwent multiple surgeries to repair his finger and contracted it. Staphylococcus aureus methicillin resistant (MRSA) during recovery. MRSA causes staph infections that are resistant to some antibiotics and are often difficult to treat.

Dr. David Kipper, who treated Depp, corroborated parts of Depp’s story in a court testimony.

Heard’s lawyers referenced statements Depp made to emergency room doctors at the time to argue that Depp cut his own finger. The actor denies.

Depp was also asked about his actions after the injury, including when he used his injured finger to write on walls in a mixture of blood and ink. Depp confirmed in court that he had done so.

text messages

Amber Heard’s attorney, Ben Rottenborn, presented several text messages that Depp sent to friends and staff as evidence, one of which referenced Heard’s “decaying corpse.”

Depp testified that he was “embarrassed” by the messages he read in court and said he uses “dark humor” at times to express himself.

Other text messages were shared in which Depp discussed his drug and alcohol use with friends such as actor Paul Bettany and musician Marilyn Manson.

Pirates of the Caribbean

As Depp’s lawsuit focuses on the damage that has been done to his lucrative career, some conversations have focused on “Pirates of the Caribbean,” the popular franchise that Depp spearheaded for five films over 15 years.

Rottenborn, Heard’s attorney, argued that Depp was aware that he was “probably out” of the sixth film or that Disney would drop or downgrade his role in it, before the actress’ editorial was published. Depp denied this.

“I would be a real simpleton if I didn’t think there was an effect on my career based on Ms. Heard, mentioning my name or not,” Depp said at the booth.

Depp shyly admitted in his deposition that he hadn’t seen the first movie in the “Pirates” franchise. He said, however, “I believed in the character with all my heart.”
