Johnny Depp x Amber Heard: Justice holds both liable for defamation

After more than six weeks, came to an end this Wednesday afternoon (1), the trial that involved two Hollywood stars, the former couple Johnny Depp and Amber Heard .

The jury found both men liable for defamation in their lawsuits against each other.

Depp sued Heard, his ex-wife, for defamation over a 2018 editorial she wrote for The Washington Post, in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” Although Depp was not named in the article, he claims it cost him lucrative acting roles. Heard sued her ex-husband for defamation over statements Depp’s attorney made about his abuse allegations.

Weighing the allegations, jurors claimed that the two defamed each other.

The jury awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. The jury awarded Heard $2 million in compensatory damages and no money for punitive damages.

Depp asked for $50 million in damages and Heard asked for $100 million. Punitive damages in the state of Virginia are limited to $350,000.

Heard kept his eyes down as the verdict was read. Depp was not present in court.
