Britain is facing a “tidal wave” of the coronavirus mutant Omicron strain and two doses of the vaccine will not be enough to contain it, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Sunday as he accelerated the boost program.
Speaking hours after the panel of experts raised the coronavirus alert level to 4, on a scale of 5, Johnson stressed that the booster schedule needs to move faster as scientists do not yet know if the mutant Group strain causes less severe disease than other mutations.
“A tidal wave of Omicron is coming,” Johnson said in a televised message Sunday night, adding: “And I’m afraid it’s clear that two doses of the vaccine just aren’t enough to provide the level of protection we all need.”
He added that scientists are aware that the Omicron strain is much more contagious and that a wave of mutation through the population that has not received a booster dose would result in an increase in hospitalizations to such an extent that the National Health Service would find it difficult to treat them.
“All beneficiaries aged 18 and over in England will have the opportunity to receive their commemorative installment before the New Year,” he added.
