The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday (7/3) that Europe must move quickly to look for other energy sources beyond Russia.
At the same time he stated that Europe cannot simply stop using oil and gas overnight, but that countries need to move fast together to look beyond Russia for its oil and gas supplies.
Asked if a European ban on oil imports from Russia would be imposed, he told a news conference: “There are different dependencies in different countries, and we have to be aware of that, and “We can not just stop the use of oil and gas overnight even by Russia.”
“We can move fast in the UK… what we need to do is make sure we are all moving in the same direction… and that we are accelerating this movement and I think that is what you will see,” he added.
At the same time, he said that in the coming days he will define an energy supply strategy after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which pushed oil and gas prices to high levels for years.
“I will draw up a strategy for the country’s energy supply in the coming days,” he told a news conference.
He announced additional sanctions
The British Prime Minister also stated that his government is committed to providing an additional 175 million pounds ($ 230.28 million) in aid to Ukraine to help it cope with a growing humanitarian crisis.
The additional funding raises British support for Ukraine to about εκατο 400 million, the British prime minister said, according to APE-MPE.
“I am announcing an additional 5 175 million in British aid to Ukraine, $ 100 million of which will be provided directly to the Ukrainian government,” Johnson told a news conference.
He also said that London is in a position impose sanctions on hundreds of people on March 15, if the emergency legislation is passed as planned, Foreign Minister Liz Tras said today.
“If parliament approves the legislation by Monday, March 14, we will be able to impose sanctions on hundreds of people by next Tuesday, March 15,” he said.
