Joint operation removes 337 workers from conditions analogous to slavery

The Attorney General’s Office announced, this Thursday (28), that 337 workers were removed in conditions similar to slavery. The action, jointly with other bodies, began on July 4 and is still ongoing.

The initiative is the result of a partnership between six public bodies: Federal Public Ministry (MPF); Undersecretary of Labor Inspection, Ministry of Labor and Welfare (SIT); Public Ministry of Labor (MPT); Federal Police (PF); Public Defender’s Office (DPU); and Federal Highway Police (PRF).

According to the PGR, employers caught submitting workers to these conditions were notified to interrupt activities and formalize the employment relationship, in addition to paying the salary and severance pay due to workers, which already total more than R$ 3.8 million.

In addition to rescuing workers, the operation aims to verify compliance with labor protection rules; allow the collection of evidence to hold those responsible for the exploitation of workers accountable in the criminal sphere; and ensure the repair of individual and collective damages caused to those rescued.

Complaints about slave labor can be made remotely and confidentially at the Ipê Systemcreated by the Undersecretariat of Labor Inspection (SIT) in partnership with the International Labor Organization (ILO), by Dial 100 or by this site.
