It’s been three years since Joker won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival demonstrating the artistic value of a cinecomic, and for three years the director Todd Phillips has been beating around the bush on a second chapter, evading the question of journalists with great skill. At least until now. IS The Hollywood Reporter to reveal, in fact, not only that the film is in the works, but also that it will be a musical. The title, Joker: Folie à Deuxwas announced by Phillips himself, while the most succulent news concerns a possible new entry: it seems, in fact, that Lady Gaga is in talks to play alongside Joaquin Phoenix in the role of Harley Quinn, the historical companion of the Joker interpreted in the saga of Suicide Squad by Margot Robbie.
Certainly it would be a big hit for the franchise which, in addition to the Oscar-winning performance of Phoenix, would focus on the talent of a singer who is increasingly dedicated to acting and who, after the flop of House of Guccidefinitely needs a comeback in style. Everything, of course, would be functional to the new formula of the musical that the film would have decided to adopt: not a small novelty and which, at least on paper, already seems to be winning. According to sources close to the production, the script would have been delivered in the second week of June by Phillips and Scott Silver, the author of the previous film, to Warner Bros, who would have given the immediate green light to the preparation.
The psychological introspection of Arthur Fleck, a struggling comedian forced to deal with a very labile balance, plus Lady Gaga’s extraordinary talent would be a perfect combo to make Joker 2 a winning product across the board. The reserve, however, is not yet dissolved: it seems, however, that the plot will revolve around the meeting between Joker and Harley Quinn, presented as a psychiatrist who, at some point, will decide to take the field with him and sow panic in the streets of Gotham City. The title, Folie à Deuxon the other hand it literally means “madness for two”, a French term for a psychotic disorder shared by two people who have close emotional ties.
