Not so much beauty had been seen all together since the days of Brokeback Mountain, yet here we are, faced with the Showtime stroke of genius that decided to put together the star of Bridgerton Jonathan Bailey and the much appreciated Matt Bomer in a miniseries in which we will see them passionate lovers. The project is called Fellow Travelers, is based on the Thomas Mallon novel of the same name and will tell, in eight episodes, a story halfway between love and thriller that begins in the shadow of post-WWII McCarthy-era Washington and continues for another four decades.
Bomer will lend his face to the charming and charismatic Hawkins Fuller, a man of the world who likes to avoid emotional tangles until he meets Tim Laughlin, aka Jonathan Bailey, a deeply religious man with whom he will start a relationship. Timing doesn’t seem to be Hawkins and Tim’s forte though. as it was in those weeks that Senator Joseph McCarthy and his chief adviser Roy Cohn declared war on “subversives and sexual deviants.” The story of the two men will be told over 40 years, from the protests of the Vietnam War to the drug outbreak of the 1970s to the shadow of AIDS of the 1980s.
In a Hollywood increasingly devoted to inclusiveness and respect for minorities, it will certainly be nice to know that Fellow Travelers will see as two protagonists two openly gay actors in two roles belonging to the LGBTQ world, although we are sure that the series, created by Ron Nyswaner, nominated for an Oscar in 1993 for that masterpiece of Philadelphia by Jonathan Demme, will meet the taste of many.
