Russia is putting the world at risk of starvation by blocking grain exports from Ukraine and restricting its own exports, European Union Foreign Minister Josep Borrell accused Moscow today.
Threats to food security and a “battle of narratives” with Russia over the reality of sanctions imposed on Moscow will be the focus of EU foreign ministers’ talks in Luxembourg on Monday.
“We are ready to work with the UN to prevent any unintended impact of our sanctions on global food security,” said Josep Borrell in an article published on his official blog.
The head of European diplomacy denounces “Russia’s conscious political choice to ‘militarize’ grain exports and use them as a tool of blackmail against anyone who opposes its attack” on Ukraine.
“Russia has turned the Black Sea into a war zone, blocking shipments of grain and fertilizer originating in Ukraine (…) and also imposing quotas and taxes on its own grain exports,” he said.
EU sanctions “do not prohibit Russia from exporting or buying agricultural products and seeds, provided that the persons or entities subject to sanctions are not involved” in such operations, the European Union (EU) chief said. .
“We are fully aware that there is a ‘battle of narratives’ around this issue of sanctions,” he admits.
“There is an urgent need to allow the resumption of Ukrainian exports by sea. We are working closely with the UN and we hope that a solution can be found in the coming days. Do not run the risk of causing a global food disaster,” he warned.
