The EU High Representative called the war in Ukraine an awakening Joseph Borel, speaking at the European Defense Agency’s annual conference in Brussels.
“The war against Ukraine was a rude awakening for all of us. The war cannot end with Russia winning, occupying Ukraine and turning it (Ukraine) into a country like Belarus. We must continue to support them to defend themselves,” he said.
The High Representative also referred to the meeting he had with its Prime Minister Ukrainian almost five weeks before the Russian invasion and the “dramatic request” he accepted.
“I visited the front line in Donbass in early January, about five weeks before the start of the war. I remember that after my visit I had a meeting with the Ukrainian Prime Minister, he was already convinced that Russia would attack. And he said to me, look, I know that when the Russia will attack us, when he does you will not come to support us with your troops. We don’t expect European soldiers to come and fight by our side, but at least we would like you to support us militarily and provide us with the armaments we will need to defend ourselves,” noted Josep Borel.
“It was a dramatic request coming from someone who was already convinced that in a few days his people would be fighting and their country would be bombed. I tried to convince him that the Europeans would support him, which they do,” she added according to the correspondent of the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency.
