Josie Osborne believes that the amendments will allow the authorities to regulate the “uncontrolled growth” of mining companies, as well as prohibit the use of electricity by miners in the interests of powering households and industrial enterprises.
The Minister of Energy assures that the restrictions will not entail significant negative consequences for the province, since the activities of mining companies create minimal jobs and economic opportunities.
“We are suspending consideration of requests from mining farm operators to connect to electricity sources. The goal: to conserve electricity for people who switch to electric vehicles and heat pumps, and for businesses that reduce carbon emissions and create jobs,” the minister said in a statement.
Josie Osborne said that the agency has already suspended consideration of applications to connect more than twenty new mining projects, which together could consume about 12,000 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually. The new restrictions will not affect existing crypto-asset mining companies: the minister assured.
Earlier, a court in the Canadian province of British Columbia upheld an 18-month moratorium on the supply of electricity introduced by local energy companies for companies involved in cryptocurrency mining.
