He had been hospitalized at Hospital Sírio-Libanês, in São Paulo, since December after suffering a cerebrovascular accident (CVA).

History

Born in 1940 in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Arnaldo Jabor is the son of an Air Force officer and a housewife.

He began his journalistic career at age 22 at O Metropolitano, a newspaper linked to the student movement.

In 1967, he took his first steps as a filmmaker when he released his first feature film – the documentary “Opinião Pública”, about how Brazilians look at their own reality.

Jabor participated in the second phase of the Cinema Novo movement, which, inspired by Italian neorealism and the French Nouvelle Vague, opposed productions in the Hollywood style of the time and sought to bring the country’s political and social issues to the screen.

With the repression of the military dictatorship, in the 70s the directors resorted to metaphorical paths and allegories to continue their proposal without being caught by the censors.

At the end of 1972, Jabor released one of his main productions in life – the adaptation of the homonymous play by Nelson Rodrigues, “Toda Nudez Will Be Castigada”. The film tells the story of Herculano, a conservative widower who swore he would never have another woman, but meets and falls in love with Geni, who works as a prostitute.

The film was the fourth highest grossing national that year, and received the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival the following year.

In the 1990s, during the Collor administration, he returned to dedicate himself to journalism more actively. He debuted as a columnist for the newspaper O Globo at the end of 1995, and later took the column to television, on Rede Globo.

“Addressing the most varied themes (cinema, arts, sexuality, national and international politics, economy, love, philosophy, prejudice), his “spicy” interventions on television and in his columns earned him admirers and many critics”, recalls the official website. from Jabor.
