Juanita Castle, younger sister of former Cuban leaders Fidel and Raul Castro, whom she opposed for decades, has died aged 90 in Miami where she lived in exile, a journalist who maintains a relationship with the family made known.
“Juanita Castro, extraordinary woman, tireless fighter for her cause Bucket that she loved so much, is gone,” Maria Antonietta Collins, who helped write the memoir of the deceased, who lived in southeast Florida since the 1960s, announced via Instagram. Juanita Castro left Cuba in 1964 after falling out with her brothers, Fidel — he died in Havana in 2016 — and Raul, due to her disagreements with the direction taken by revolution in Cuba in 1959.
In exile in Miami, she publicly denounced the politics of her brothers. She worked with the CIA, codenamed “Donna,” according to her own account. It had opened pharmacy in Miami and worked there for decades.
In her memoirs, under the title “Fidel and Raul, my brothers, the secret history,” she stressed that she was unable to come to terms with being the sister of communist leaders and joining the community of Cuban exiles in Florida.
“Undoubtedly, I suffered more than the other exiles”, he had written. “For those in Cuba, I was a deserter because I denounced the regime. To many in Miami, I was persona non grata because I was Fidel and Raul’s sister.” According to the Univisión network, he died of natural causes in a Miami hospital, APE-MPE reports.
“Emma’s sister and extended family are asking for it to be their privacy is respected in this painful moment. No interviews will be granted and, as was her wish, the funeral will be private,” Maria Antonietta Collins said in her Instagram post.
