Judge allows new Trump government requirements for immigration registration

A federal judge denied a request from an immigrant defense group to block the new immigration registration requirements announced by the Trump government. The new measures include the expansion of fingerprint collection mandates and registration for foreigners.

Judge Trevor McFadden ruled on Thursday (10) that contestants did not show that policy was harming immigrants in order to justify the intervention of a court.

“As organizations, many of their damages are very speculative, and they failed to demonstrate that the rule will erode their main missions,” wrote McFadden, appointed by Trump.

The decision was made a day before the policy came into force, a significant setback for the defense groups that struggled to block the comprehensive government immigration agenda.

Organizations, including Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights Los Angeles, House, Make the Road New York and United Farm Workers, filed a lawsuit last month against the rule that requires foreigners 14 years or older to register in the government, present biometric data and have proof of registration – under threat of criminal penalties.

The provisional final rule, announced on March 12 and scheduled to take effect on Friday (11), ignores public consultation and resumes broad measures of registration not seen since World War II.

Contestors argue that it violates the law of administrative procedure, creates confusion and threatens civil liberties. They also warn of potential racial discrimination, legal risks for immigrants and interruption of legal assistance services.
