Judge blocks Trump’s prohibition on trans people in the Armed Forces

A federal judge indefinitely blocked President Donald Trump’s ban on trans people in the Armed Forces. The measure means a defeat to a controversial policy that Trump brought back from his first term.

In a striking decision, the judge of the US District Court, Ana Reyes, said the government cannot apply the ban – which was expected to take effect later this month.

Reyes, appointed by former President Joe Biden, wrote that the ban “is impregnated with animosity and overflowing with pretexts. His language is blatantly derogatory, his policy stigmatizes trans people as intrinsically incapable, and their conclusions have nothing to do with facts.”

“The defendants did not have a legitimate reason to ban all trans military,” he wrote.

The judge said she was suspending her preliminary injunction until Friday morning to give the government time to appeal to the Washington Circuit Appeals.
