In an interview with CNN, Judge Ivana David, from the São Paulo Court of Justice (TJSP), spoke about recent cases of crimes in São Paulo involving police officers.
The judge emphasized the need for the State to punish corrupt agents and confront deviations within the São Paulo police institution.
According to Ivana, it is essential that the government demonstrates courage in dealing with this delicate situation.
“It is important that the government has the courage to face it, not to hide it, to show the press and society that it is aware of this deviation within the institution”, stated the judge.
Control and punishment mechanisms
The judge highlighted the existence of mechanisms to combat police corruption.
“Today there are mechanisms and the Public Ministry, the Federal Police and even the internal affairs bodies of each police department are there, attentive to this type of situation”, explained Ivana.
She highlighted that, if there are wrong choices, the consequence for the police officers should be removal from the institution.
Ivana David also emphasized the importance of the police for society: “Society needs the police, be it the overt police or the investigative police. There is no State without police.”
However, she reinforced that the purification of police forces is necessary and must be carried out with transparency.
The judge stated that the more courage and transparency there is in facing these problems, the better it will be for society and for the police institution itself.
This approach, according to her, is fundamental to maintaining the population’s trust in the security forces and guaranteeing the integrity of the justice system.
