For the first time in the history of Costa Rica, the judicial authorities have made a request to Parliament – where the opposition is dominated – calling for the removal of President Rodrigo Chavez’s immunity in order to move a criminal procedure for corruption. With an open conflict between the powers, the Supreme Court plenary decided by a majority in its extraordinary meeting to “forward to parliament a request for the removal of immunity” by President Chavez, according to a statement by the judiciary.
