Julian Assange: Appeal against extradition to the United States dismissed

The Supreme Court of Britain rejected the request of the founder of Wikileaks Julian Assange to appeal his extradition decision to the US, which wants to try him for a massive leak of documents, the court announced. According to a court spokeswoman, the lawsuit was dismissed on the grounds that it did not raise “any reasonable legal issues”, according to Reuters and AFP.

The file will now be returned to the Minister of the Interior Priti PatelWikileaks reported on Twitter.

The 50-year-old Australian is being prosecuted by the US for publishing, since 2010, more than 700,000 secret documents on military and diplomatic activities, in particular in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He is confronted with 175 years imprisonmentin a case denounced as an attack on the freedom of the press by its supporters.

In January 2021, British justice had initially ruled for of the founder of Wikileaks. Citing the risk of Julian Assange committing suicide, Judge Vanessa Baraitzer had refused to give the green light for his extradition.

But Washington claimed a big win in December when it Supreme Court annulled this decision, considering that the USA provided guarantees that responded to the concerns of the court.

Julian Assange was then allowed to testify appeal against the decision of the Supreme Court before the Supreme Court, which refused to examine it.
