Juliette Binoche accuses Trump of trying to save reputation by taxing movies

Juliette Binoche, President of the Cannes Festival jury this year, said on Tuesday (13) that the Threat of US President Donald Trump from imposing 100% rates on films produced abroad among other political decisions, it is also related to the attempt to save your reputation .

“We can see that he is fighting and trying, in many different ways, to save America and save his own skin,” the French actress told journalists in the coastal city of the French Riviera.

“We have a very strong film community on our continent in Europe, so I really don’t know what to say about it (the announcement of tariffs),” added Binoche.

The actress, Oscar’s winner, will decide along with eight other jury members – including actors Halle Berry and Jeremy Strong – which movie will take home the Golden Palm, the festival’s main prize.

Strong, known for playing Kendall Roy in HBO’s “Succession” series, said that, under the presidency of Trump, the role of cinema as a way of communicating the truth became even more important.

He commented that he sees his participation in the jury as a counterpoint to the role he played as Roy Cohn, mentor of the young Trump, in the movie “The Apprentice”, which competed in Cannes last year.

“I see Roy Cohn essentially as the creator of fake news and alternative facts. And we are living the consequences of what I think he created,” said Strong.

Separately, Halle Berry – who played Jinx in the James Bond movie “007 – a new day to die” – ruled out the possibility of returning to the spy franchise after Amazon’s MGM studio, signing an agreement this year to take on creative control of the saga through a new joint venture.

“I don’t know if the 007 really should be a woman,” Berry said, adding that the moment for a spin-off with Jinx has passed.

“In 2025, it’s beautiful to say, ‘Oh, she should be a woman,’ but I really don’t know if I think that’s the right thing to do.”
