July 2022 is among the warmest on record, says UN

The World Meteorological Organization, agency of the United Nations Organization (UN), states that July 2022 is among the three most hot already registered.

According to the institution, the thermometer was about 0.4°C above the categorized reference period from 1991 to 2020.

This year, the month only had averages lower than 2019 and slightly higher than 2019, because the margins were so small that a clear classification is not possible, explains the agency.

In the assessment of WMO Secretary General Petteri Taalas, “this type of heat wave is the new normal”.

Heat in the Northern Hemisphere

The WMO points out that not even La Niña, a weather phenomenon that influences cooling, was enough to quell the prolonged and intense heat waves in Europe.

Thermometers exceeded 40°C in parts of Portugal, Spain, France and the United Kingdom.

In Spain, July was the month with the highest temperatures since 1961, with an average of 2.7ºC above normal. The temperatures recorded in the UK were record.

With the heat, the European continent also suffered from dry weather and low rainfall. The lack of rain has hit local economies, agriculture and triggered forest fires.

The trend of exceptionally hot and dry weather continues in August, the agency points out, with the south of France marking up to 5°C above normal for this time of year.

In the United States, this July was the third warmest on record. Daytime temperatures above 37.8°C increased energy demand and the incidence of heat-related illness.
