Jump in oil prices puts Europe in unsustainable situation, says Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron appealed on Tuesday (28) to oil-producing countries to increase their production in order to reduce global prices of the commodity, which have been boosted by the war in Ukraine. According to him, the jump in prices is putting Europe in an “unsustainable” situation.

Macron, who spoke at the end of a G7 summit in Germany, praised the group’s discussions on capping oil prices as “a very good idea” but stressed that there are “technical difficulties”. He added that, to be effective, it is crucial that an eventual agreement include all major oil-buying countries.

He said he had discussed a possible oil supply increase with the UAE president and expressed hope that U.S. President Joe Biden would get a “positive response” in negotiations on the matter on a future visit to Saudi Arabia.

For the French leader, oil producers have an “immense responsibility, as we collectively depend on them”.

Macron also called for Europe to expand its liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing capacity and criticized speculative moves by energy operators, calling them “war profiteers”.
