“Just crouch down until it passes you,” Florida governor says of Hurricane Idalia

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has urged residents of the state to heed warnings from emergency officials to protect themselves as Hurricane Idalia approaches the Gulf Coast. The storm is expected to reach the state at 9:00 a.m. [horário de Brasília].

“This thing is powerful. If you’re inside, just crouch down until she passes you. You don’t want to play with those winds. There will be things flying everywhere,” she said on Wednesday morning (30).

“We just hope everyone stays safe. Don’t put your life on the line by doing something stupid at this point,” she added.

DeSantis said that while residents are urged to stay on and off the streets as Idalia passes through the state, authorities will begin search-and-rescue missions as soon as it is safe to do so.

Hurricane Idalia intensified to a Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 201 km/h before making landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast Wednesday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center. NHC).

The NHC added that “although Idalia is expected to weaken after making landfall, it is likely to still be a hurricane as it moves through southern Georgia and near the state coast or southern South Carolina late tonight.”
