Experts of the analytical company Strategy Analytics have summed up the results of the third quarter of 2021 in the market of application processors (applications processor or AP as opposed to processors that provide work in networks) for smartphones. According to a report prepared by analysts, the specified market in annual terms grew by 17% and reached 8.3 billion dollars.
The market leader is Qualcomm, which accounts for 34% of shipments. It is followed by Apple with 28%. MediaTek is in third place with 27%. At the same time, MediaTek completed the first nine months of 2021, ahead of Qualcomm by 26 million units. This means that MediaTek has a chance to become a leading AP provider by the end of the year.
According to experts, Qualcomm has shifted its priority from entry-level and mid-range models with 4G support to high-end solutions in order to maximize the production capacity of contract manufacturers available to it. As a result, MediaTek managed to increase its share in the segment of models with support for 4G. At the same time, shipments of 5G-enabled models grew 82% year over year, resulting in a 19% increase in the average selling price.
Three quarters of all processors shipped in the third quarter of 2021 were manufactured at TSMC facilities. In second place among manufacturers – Samsung Foundry. Models manufactured using 7nm or less rates accounted for 47% of total shipments in Q3 2021.
