The São Paulo court must decide in the coming weeks whether military police officer Henrique Velozo, accused of murdering jiu-jitsu fighter Leandro Lo last year, will go to a popular jury.
The athlete was shot in the head by the Military Police during a show at Clube Sírio, in São Paulo, in the early hours of August 7, 2022. from ambush.
On Tuesday (23) the last hearing of the case took place, at the 1st Court of the Jury, at the Criminal Forum of Barra Funda.
According to Velozo’s defense attorney, Cláudio Dalledone Júnior, all the witnesses indicated by the prosecution, as well as those of the defense, were heard. In addition, the defendant was questioned.
According to the defender, the PM revealed the “circumstances that motivated his defensive action and everything became very clear”, he said, in a note. Dalledone also defended that the secrecy of Justice be removed from the case.
Now, both defense and prosecution have ten days to manifest. Only then should the Court decide on the jury.
In a video obtained by the production of CNN the lawyer for Leando Lo’s family, Adriano Vanni, says that the judge should give a decision in favor of going to the popular jury because the defendant confirmed the authorship of the crime at the hearing.
“I can’t give details here because the case is confidential to Justice, but his version is easily denied and that’s what we’ll do”, he revealed. He also stated that the defendant “confesses authorship in plenary, here at the hearing, so it should go to the jury”, he concluded.

On the night of the crime, according to witnesses, the jiu-jitsu fighter was with five friends at the club, when the police officer, who also practices martial arts, approached and started to provoke the group, taking the drinks that were on the table. Leandro then reacted and asked him to leave the place.
In the sequence, the fighter would have been “breasted” by the PM and, therefore, immobilized him. After walking away, reports say that the officer pulled a gun and shot. He would still have kicked Leandro’s head twice, who was already lying on the ground, unconscious.
The athlete was rescued and taken to Arthur Saboya Municipal Hospital, in Jabaquara, in the south zone of São Paulo, but he did not resist and was declared brain dead the following morning.
