The magistrate of the prison system of Rio de Janeiro at the Court of Justice (TJ), Bruno Monteiro Rulière, ordered the transfer of former governor Sérgio Cabral and five other military police officers who are imprisoned in the Prison Battalion of Niterói, the BEP.
The unit, which is managed by the Military Police (PM), had two inspections in recent days, where seven cell phones, televisions, marijuana cigarettes, injectable testosterone, restaurant deliveries, designer clothes and amounts of cash were seized.
In the order of this Tuesday (3), the judge still determines that the prisoners stay in their own galleries, separated from the other inmates of the unit. They will go to the Laercio da Costa Pelegrino Penitentiary, the Bangu 1 unit, in the Gericinó Complex.
The site is one of the most strictly restricted units in the state, where gang leaders, assassins and bank robbers are held.
The 27-page document reports the perks found in the prison, such as seven cell phones, some hidden in false drawers that were located in several cells, including Cabral’s.
The judge also asked the Public Ministry’s Security and Intelligence Coordination to break the secrecy of the seized cell phones, especially with regard to WhatsApp dialogues, to try to find other irregularities and crimes committed.
PM’s Internal Affairs is called
THE CNN, the governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro (PL), said that he ordered an investigation by the Internal Affairs Department of the Military Police into the benefits in the BEP and also made a “hard charge” to the secretary of the PM about what was discovered at the scene.
“I made the charge that had to be made. The Military Police internal affairs department has already been called so that we can clarify and punish the possible culprits. It doesn’t have to have a benefit and it doesn’t have to have a hostile environment either. People have to have a decent environment to serve their sentence and recover, which is what we want for our entire prison population,” Castro said.
The Press Office of the Secretary of State for Military Police informs that, by order of the command of the Prison Unit of the Corporation (UP/PMERJ), all decisions of the Court of Criminal Executions are being strictly complied with.
As part of these procedures, they state that six persons in custody, including five officers, are already responding to administrative disciplinary proceedings and had, preventively, their right to visits suspended.
Cabral’s defense cites a report from TV Globo’s Fantástico, which revealed the first irregularities this Sunday (1st).
The lawyers claim that it “depicts an unfounded persecution, since nothing was found in the ex-governor’s cell, who even does not respond to any PAD (Disciplinary Administrative Procedure)”.
“The defense will react vigorously to prevent this barbarism further.” The note is signed by the lawyer Patrícia Proetti.
