Justice investigates gas stations for false advertising

Apps that give discounts and other benefits to customers who fill up their cars are increasingly common. The objective is to retain the customer. Those who always supply from the same network of gas stations, collect points and exchange them for discounts. But the customer is not always able to access the promotion information clearly. Often, he fills up the car thinking that the fuel is in the price and only later discovers that the product is more expensive.

Environmental Analyst João Paulo Ribeiro, lives in Brasília, and says that the practice is common. For him, in addition to confusing and lacking in details, advertisements often do not explain the details of the promotion.

To avoid misleading advertisements for discounts at gas stations, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security began an investigation into the actions of two large gas stations. They will have to provide clarification on this type of advertising, as highlighted by the director of the Department of Consumer Protection and Defense at the Ministry of Justice, Lilian Brandão.

“Although it is recognized that the offer of discounts is under no circumstances an illegal practice. The way in which information has been presented at gas stations is not adequate and clear. They would be inducing the consumer to make an error which, obviously, violates the consumer protection code in its most fundamental right, which is clear and intelligible information”.

The Ministry of Justice recommends attention from drivers and if the consumer finds an abusive practice, he must file a complaint with bodies such as Procon, the Public Ministry and the Public Defender’s Office.
