The Rio de Janeiro court ordered Maxwell Simões Corrêa Junior released from prison. He is the son of Maxwell Corrêa, known as “Suel” and who is in prison on suspicion of participation in the murders of Marielle Franco and Anderson Gomes.
Suel's son was arrested in August last year in an investigation in which both are being investigated for alleged participation in the so-called “gatonet” in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. According to investigations, the two participate in an internet and subscription TV sales scheme in a community in Rio where Maxwell was a partner of Ronnie Lessa, a former military police officer identified as the murderer of the councilwoman and the driver.
The decision was made this Thursday night (11), by judge Bruno Vaccari Manfrenatti of the 1st Specialized Court in Criminal Organization.
In the document, the magistrate relaxes the prison, in addition to Maxwell father and Maxwell son, also Ronnie Lessa. And determines precautionary measures against Suel's wife.
Lessa and Suel, however, must remain in prison for the Marielle-Anderson case. They are in the federal prisons of Campo Grande (MS) and Brasília (DF), respectively.
“Gatonet”
On August 4 last year, the Federal Police and the Public Ministry of Rio launched an operation that targeted the clandestine subscription TV service, or “gatonet”, controlled by Suel. Seven search and seizure warrants were executed on that date. A CNN confirmed that Suel's wife was also the target of search and seizure, in Recreio, a neighborhood in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro.
At the end of July, the PF stated that Suel was responsible for controlling the exploitation of the clandestine service in the region of Rocha Miranda, in the North Zone of Rio. The information was given by Leandro Almada da Costa, regional superintendent of the Federal Police, in the interview Operation Élpis press conference, in which Suel was arrested, on July 25th.
“[Suel] has already been denounced by the Public Ministry for exploiting gatonet. This criminal environment permeates even the origin of the crime itself. [Ronnie] Lessa. There is the issue of the history of the crime, other killers, other executioners who work in this context in Rio de Janeiro”, said Almada.
According to investigations, Suel had assets incompatible with his income. Among the possible evidence found, the investigators' attention was drawn to the high standard of the former firefighter's housing.
As shown by the CNN investigators discovered the movement of R$5.3 million in the accounts of Suel and companies linked to him in three months.
Regarding the Court's decision, Maxwell Junior and Suel's defense preferred not to comment.
