Bruno da Cunha de Araújo Pereira was an indigenist and one of the leading experts on indigenous people living in isolation in Brazil🇧🇷 Pereira was licensed from Funai and worked as an advisor for Univaja. Born in Recife, he was 41 years old and leaves a wife and three children.

Journalist Dom Phillips collaborated with several newspapers abroad, such as The New York Times, The Guardian and The Washington Post. He made several trips to the Amazon, where he reported on deforestation and crime. He had lived in Brazil for 15 years and was married to a Brazilian woman.

Phillips and Pereira had already traveled to the Amazon together and, on this occasion, the journalist was accompanied by the Brazilian indigenist to collect data for a book he was writing on how to save the forest.

On June 5, the indigenist and the journalist disappeared a few kilometers from Vale do Javari, which is the second largest indigenous reserve in Brazil. The last time they were seen, they stopped in the community of São Rafael, at 6 am, where they had a meeting scheduled with the fisherman leader Manoel Vitor Sabino da Costa, known as “Churrasco”.

The pair should have arrived at the North Watchtower two hours later, but that never happened. Univaja indigenous people were the first to report the disappearance and began the search at 2 pm.

On June 15, one of the main suspects in the disappearance, Amarildo Oliveira da Costa, known as “Pelado”, confessed to having participated in the murder of the duo. Between the 17th and 18th, the PF confirmed the recognition of the remains belonging to the indigenist and the journalist.

According to the expertise, they were killed with hunting weapons🇧🇷 Bruno Pereira was shot three times, while Dom Phillips was shot dead.

So far, the Amazonas PF has identified eight suspects who helped to hide the bodies of Pereira and Phillips. Three suspects were arrested: Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira, known as “Pelado”; Oseney da Costa de Oliveira, the “Dos Santos”; and Jeferson da Silva Lima, called “Pelado da Dinha”.
