K. Ah. Karamanlis: The new contract for Attiki Odos is in favor of the citizens

“The new contract with Attiki Odos will safeguard the interest of the citizens and not of the contractors,” said the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Costas Karamanlis, regarding the recent bad weather and stressed that “the responsibilities of the concessionaire are obvious”.

In an interview with Proto Thema, Mr. Karamanlis stressed that “the most important thing is that finally and for the first time, these responsibilities can be assigned to him. The 1996 Attiki Odos contract was a classic” PASOK contract “, that is, cut and sewn to the measures of the contractor. It bound us, without being ours. But our government, in 2020, created the legal framework for assigning responsibilities to the concessionaires when the highways are closed. put an end to the phenomenon of creating problems in the road network and then no one pays … So, responsibilities must be assigned. Sanctions must be imposed. And so it will be. We have already set up the Commission of Inquiry and we are waiting for its conclusion soon. ” Yes to private initiative ”, ” yes to cooperation with individuals ” but under a clear and strict condition: with a supervisory – and not decorative – role of the State with transparent terms, limits, oblige and rights “.

Regarding the planning of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport for the Attiki Odos extension projects, Mr. Karamanlis noted that: “This is something we are working on intensively. But all these projects are not fragmentary. Looking ahead we can assume that in in a few years Athens will have the “luck” – misfortune of many big cities abroad: its center will be inaccessible, so from now on we are trying to compose a grid of projects, “the projects of Attica”, with three very important interventions – extension of Kymi Avenue, extension of Rafina – Lavrio, extension of the western peripheral Avenue of Ymittos to Ilioupoli – which will raise a security wall so that the capital is not “drowned” by traffic “.
