K. Frangogiannis – Economist Conference: Astypalea’s project reflects the development image of Greece

The project of transforming Astypalea into the first “smart and sustainable” island of the Mediterranean was presented by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Economic Diplomacy and Extroversion, Costas Frangogiannis, in his online participation in the 6th London Business Summit held today at the Stock Exchange.

This is an organization of the Economist Group on the prospects of economic relations, in terms of trade and investment, United Kingdom – Greece – Cyprus, under the title UK-Greece-Cyprus: Taking Trade and Investment to the next level.

Speaking in the section entitled Innovative Markets-Innovative business and the topic of innovative ideas and companies, the Undersecretary of State underlined the symbolic, among other things, value of the Astypalea project, as it reflects the new image of Greece, development, progress and innovation. .

GS DOSE I. Smyrlis: Development dynamics of Greece as a regional hub for energy, logistics, innovation

A little earlier, the Secretary General of International Economic Relations and Extroversion (DOSE) and President of Enterprise Greece, Ioannis Smyrlis, in a discussion on “Investing in the region: sharing opportunities and challenges”, presented the range of investment opportunities he is able to offer Greece, following a series of targeted government reforms to improve economic indicators, competitiveness and the business environment.

In his speech, Mr. Smyrlis underlined the “growth dynamics” that the country presents, as a regional hub for energy, logistics and innovation. He also spoke about the “new era” that marks the National Strategic Plan for Recovery and Sustainability “Greece 2.0” in areas such as green energy, digital transformation, health, education, technology and innovation.

Specifically for the tourism sector, Mr. Smyrlis spoke of “new investment opportunities”, noting the tripling of investments in this sector in 2020 and for 150 new hotels – most of which are 4 and 5 star – which operate from 2019 and for dozens more that are being developed.

The Secretary-General also referred to the “Single Gateway to Extroversion” which he described as a “substantial reform in the field of economic diplomacy” as it is a single coherent structure under the roof of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which includes Enterprise Greece, the Export Credit Insurance Agency. and the network of Embassies and Offices of Economic and Commercial Affairs.

Referring to the government’s targets for stimulating Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and for Greek exports by 2023 – after last year’s records in FDI and exports, which reached 5 and 40 billion euros respectively – he noted that for FDI , the goal is to double them to 4% of GDP and for exports, to increase them to 48% of GDP, from 37% in 2019.

In conclusion, Mr. Smyrlis said that “with targeted policies we ensure that the existing growth potential will be sustainable in the future”, emphasizing that Greece is a safe investment constraint with huge potential in Southeast Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean and a pillar of peace, security , stability and prosperity in the wider region.
