K. Frangogiannis’s visit to Argyrokastro is constructive

A cordial and constructive meeting with the Minister of Tourism and Environment of Albania, Mirela Kumbaro, ended yesterday, Thursday 28 April, the two-day visit of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Economic Diplomacy and Extroversion, Costa Frangogro and Evros on April 27 and 28.

The visit took place on the occasion of the opening of a trade exhibition co-organized, for the first time, by the Chambers of Commerce of Argyrokastro and Ioannina in the context of their twinning. The “present” at the opening of the exhibition was given, among others, by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Artemis Malo, as well as the Mayor of Ioannina, Moses Elisaf.

According to a relevant announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this is an initiative that seals the positive atmosphere in the Greek-Albanian relations as well as the common will of both sides – both at the level of political leadership and at the level of business world – to strengthen and expand economic cooperation. trade, tourism, energy and transport.

“I am very happy to be here today for the inauguration of this important for the further development and deepening of the economic and trade relations between Greece and Albania, the first Albanian-Greek trade fair and I hope this initiative will develop into an annual institution,” said Mr. Frangogiannis . For her part, Ms Kumbaro stressed the importance of the initiative to further strengthen the bonds of friendship between the two peoples.

During yesterday, the second day of his visit to Argyrokastro, according to the announcement, the Undersecretary of State had a working meeting at the Consulate General of Argyrokastro, with 11 expatriate businessmen operating in the area, and then visited and toured the facilities of 4 of them. business, from the food and beverage sector. Mr. Frangogiannis discussed with the businessmen issues concerning the operation of the companies and conveyed the will of the Greek state to support in every way their activity and the prospects for its further development. He commented that the mere presence of such a large number of Greek companies – and in fact profitable – in an area with a population of about 23,000 inhabitants, such as Argyrokastro, is remarkable but also indicative of the interest of expatriate entrepreneurs for their place of origin and their important role in the Albanian economy as a whole.

On the first day of the visit, on Wednesday 27 April, Mr. Frangogiannis had the opportunity to tour the villages of the Greek national minority of the Municipality of Dropoli and Pogoni, mainly, where he met with representatives of local government. He said he was impressed by the natural beauty of the area and recorded the concerns and intense frustration of his interlocutors for the poor condition of the infrastructure, especially the road network. He pledged that he would make every effort at the political level and in cooperation with the competent authorities in Greece and Albania, in order to improve the situation. In this regard, he informed the representatives of the local communities that he has already secured donations of construction materials – cement and iron – as well as a budget of 150,000 euros from the Development Assistance programs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for infrastructure projects in the region.

Mr. Frangogiannis also met with the governor and the mayor of the city, as well as with a representative of the Albanian Ministry of Interior. The talks focused on the development prospects of the region, both tourist and economic in general, with Albanian officials praising the role of the Greek national minority, calling it the “organic part” of Albania and a “bridge of friendship” between the two countries.

It is noted that in the meetings that the Undersecretary of State had during his visit to Argyrokastro, all his interlocutors praised the active and substantial presence of the local diplomatic authorities, the embassy of Tirana under the ambassador, Sofia Filippidou and the Consul General Dimitris Sacharidis.
