K. Hatzidakis: We do social policy in practice

“We are making a social policy in practice! We do not give away social sensitivity to the Left,” points out the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Kostis Hatzidakis, in a post on his personal Facebook account, commenting on the debate in Parliament on social policy.

As he notes, “the results destroy the narrative especially of SYRIZA, which believed that in this field it could do damage to the government”. “However, we know at the same time that this effort was and is our obligation towards our conscience and towards our financially weak fellow citizens” he says characteristically.

In detail, the entire post of the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Kostis Hatzidakis, is as follows:

“Today, due to the coronavirus, I watched the debate in the Parliament on social policy from the television at home. I must say that of all the political leaders, those who spoke about social policy were Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Dimitris Koutsoubas. The others chose to talk basically about other issues: about Turkey, Novartis, about energy, and so on.

That’s what they apparently thought served them. In other parliaments of Europe this would not be allowed. In any case, however, a basic conclusion from the whole discussion is that the “privileged” field of the “benevolent” opposition, that is, social policy, has ceased to be its advantage.

Mr. Koutsoubas repeated the well-known and permanent views of the KKE, in many cases, ignoring the reality itself.

The rest spoke relatively little on the matter, with Mr. Tsipras repeating familiar lies from the past. That e.g. we allegedly give one billion to the individual “piggy banks” in relation to the supplementary pensions of young people, while the amount is 36 million (!) and so on.

What is certain is that reality speaks for itself. Without claiming that the problems of workers, unemployed and pensioners have naturally been solved, no one can dispute that:

unemployment decreased from 17.3% in summer 2019 to 12.5% in April 2022.

The minimum wage has increased by a total of 9.7% and is equivalent to an extra salary per year in the pocket of those who are paid it.

The rates of the Public Employment Service (formerly OAED) programs have tripled in the last 2.5 years.

That the Digital Work Card is the most essential guarantee for respecting employees’ hours.

That workers obtained more parental leaves and Greece is now among the 12 countries worldwide with full legal gender equality.

That we are going from record to record in the issuance of overdue main pensions and that, by summer, they will have zeroed out.

That 1555 put an end to the chaos with the downloaded phones of the Ministry of Labor and its supervised agencies.

This whole project has the signature of New Democracy and is the result of a very big effort made by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.

Yes, we know that these results destroy the narrative of SYRIZA in particular, who believed that in this field they could damage the government. But at the same time we know that this effort was and is our obligation towards our conscience and towards our financially weak fellow citizens and we will continue on the same path, implementing a policy with results. We don’t give social sensitivity to the Left. We are making a social policy in practice!”
