K. Karamanlis: ‘We are solving the water supply problem of the whole of Corfu’

The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Costas Karamanlis, referred to the ongoing projects, including the big issue of covering the water supply needs of the whole island, after the wide-ranging meeting he had at the headquarters of the Ionian Islands Region, with the participation of representatives of the local government and bodies of the island.

“We are solving the water supply problem of the whole island, with a huge project of 170,000 euros. Imagine 16.3 cubic meters of water that will be more than enough to meet the needs of an island, which is in a process of recovery. This project that was discussed above “for forty years it is finally entering the implementation path and this is something that shows the will of this government not to say big words, but to do specific projects”, pointed out the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, while he also spoke about the water supply project that concerns the city of Corfu, which is in progress, amounting to almost 22 million euros.

Besides, as Mr. Karamanlis announced, “the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in cooperation with the Ionian Islands Region will start this summer the road safety project, a project worth 32 million euros”.

The project, as promised, will be auctioned by the end of the summer.

At the same time, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport announced that the ministry is starting the upgrade of the three ports of Mathraki, Agios Stefanos Avlioton and Avlakia Othonon.

“We are moving very fast and with the very good cooperation we have with the Ministry of Merchant Shipping the upgrade of the three ports amounting to almost 27 million euros. It is about the improvement of the port of Mathraki, Stefanos Avlioton, and Avlakia Othonon. Projects that were discussed for years, but it did not happen “, the minister stressed.

“Today, with my presence here, we mark projects of almost 250 million euros and we do not stop here. It has become a very important first step to finally see a Corfu that will leave yesterday behind, a Corfu that can now enter the path of sustainable development “concluded Mr. Karamanlis in his statements.

As part of his visits today, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport went to the Kapodistrias Museum and the City Hall, while at noon he will visit the church of Agios Spyridon, where he will have a meeting with the metropolitan. His one-day visit to the island ends in the afternoon, where he will speak at an event to be held at the Corfu Chamber.
