K. Mitsotakis: A dynamic is being built for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures

The Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis refers to the “dynamics that are being built”, step by step, for the repatriation of the Parthenon Sculptures in his statements to the British newspaper “The Telegraph”.

On the occasion of the decision to return to Greece and the Acropolis Museum the “Fagan fragment” from the Antonino Salinas Museum in Palermo, which was announced this week by the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, the Prime Minister emphasizes in “Telegraph” that the agreement with the Museum of Italy could be a roadmap for the agreement with Britain.

“The debate has reached a critical juncture,” he said, referring to what followed his meeting with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, on November 16. “My sense is that a dynamic is being built and of course the ‘elephant in the room’ is the discussion we should have with the British Museum,” he told the British newspaper.

The Prime Minister notes that the visit to Downing Street and the publicity it received helped to create “a great wave of international support” for this purpose, given that public opinion in Britain also supports the request for the return of the Sculptures (based on and the last poll conducted after the November visit).

“This is an important fragment, a part of the frieze that represents the gods and which was in Sicily for about two centuries”, notes Kyriakos Mitsotakis. He stressed that the return of the fragment from Italy is an “important step” and stressed “it is not repaid as a loan but as a deposit for eight years with the prospect of remaining in the country indefinitely.”

As he explained, on January 5, announcing the agreement, Lina Mendoni the specificity and significance of the case of the Fagan fragment, from the VI stone of the eastern frieze of the Parthenon, does not lie in the long-term deposit (‘deposito’) for exposure of the fragment Acropolis Museum, but with the prospect of remaining on a permanent basis (‘sine die’) at the Acropolis Museum, reunited forever with the frieze of the Parthenon.

“The intention and aspiration of the Sicilian Government to permanently repatriate the Palermo section to Athens, confirms the long-standing ties of cultural connection and brotherhood of the two regions, as well as the de facto recognition of a common Mediterranean identity,” she said.

The “Telegraph” reports that the fragment of the Parthenon from the Antonino Salinas Museum in Palermo, Italy, will be presented on Monday at its new home, the Acropolis Museum, and will take its place in the frieze of the Parthenon, which is becoming and more complete with each section returned.

Earlier, on January 3, in a gesture of symbolism and substance, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Culture sent a message of reunification of all parts of the Parthenon, with the return of the Sculptures from the British Museum, on the occasion of the event for the return of ten fragments of its Sculptures Parthenon from the National Archaeological Museum, to the Acropolis Museum.
