K. Mitsotakis: Anyone who claims that there are magical solutions to fully absorb the costs of the crisis is lying

A message of continuous support for households and businesses, always at the limit of the country’s fiscal capabilities, the Prime Minister issued, closing the debate in Parliament on the government’s social policies with his trilogue.

“To be precise, the entire world is facing an unprecedented economic crisis and inflation the likes of which we have not seen in 40 years…With central banks unable to recognize the magnitude of the phenomenon and intervene. And there are some in this room, who claim that this problem is exclusively Greek…You fail to realize that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a cross not only in geopolitical time, but also in the world economic firmament…We have gas prices today, which they are five times higher than they were a year ago… This is the reality and if you think Mitsotakis or New Democracy is to blame, come out and say it…”, he said. “For this the government has launched a program to support society and the economy and places great emphasis on issues related to energy prices… A few days ago we announced the support framework for July and from August 1st the new electricity pricing framework is implemented…With the aim of limiting as much as possible the increase that households are asked to pay…We are moving to the limit of our fiscal possibilities…Can things get really bad in the coming months. And strong economies, like the German one, to be tested at a level that we could not have imagined and for this we must have fiscal reserves… We used them sparingly throughout the pandemic crisis and we will do the same now, in order to have the comfort that we have the ability to support households and businesses, to the extent that this is possible. We are not going to lead the country on a fiscal derailment again, implementing proposals and ideas that are not even costed and which would blow the state budget. We are not going to do that… We have given five billion euros to support citizens on the energy front… We will continue to support society to be able to limit the effects of this global burst of inflation… Anyone who claims there are magic solutions, to fully absorb the costs of this unprecedented global crisis, I am addressing the Greek citizens, he is lying to you…”, he stressed.

At the same time, Mr. Mitsotakis noted:

– Today in Greece anyone can write anything about anyone and this is the definition of a free press… Six daily newspapers are currently facing the government… A newspaper is the epitome of vulgarity and wretchedness and in any other country this newspaper would was closed. And I think you know which newspaper I’m referring to. I am referring to the “Massacre”. The country has the opposite problem. It has no protection mechanism against these atrocities…

– I have said that the elections will be held at the end of four years, despite the fact that many rumors are circulating. But it is my duty to defend institutional stability. Another is the volatility factor. The simple analog you voted for… This is the bomb you planted in the foundation… Our position is absolutely clear. Today more than ever the country needs stability. Stability is served by governments that enjoy the confidence of the House, that have the ability to move quickly, that have demonstrated that a government composed of and composed of one party has the ability to broaden its appeal and attract executives from outside the field of the New Democracy…The source of instability that exists at the moment is simple proportionality and when the elections are held at the end of the four years this bomb, which you have planted, will be deactivated and in the second election a self-reliant government will emerge for a self-reliant Greece, which today we need so much, to be able to steer the boat of our country back to safe waters.
