Athens adds today another piece in the puzzle of the diplomatic counterattack, which aims to strengthen its alliances in critical areas of the world map. The prime minister arrived, late last night, in Doha, in order to make his first official visit to Qatar, with government officials talking about a move that signals the continuation of the Greek strategy for openings in the Gulf countries.
The presence of Mr. Mitsotakis in the capital of Qatar comes at a time of repeated upheavals at domestic and European level, which have as a point of reference the crisis on the energy front. In this context, it is not considered a coincidence that in today’s meeting between the Prime Minister (he is accompanied in Doha by the Minister of Energy, Kostas Skrekas) and the Emir of Qatar, energy issues will dominate the talks, with Greek aspirations related to the expansion of cooperation between in both countries.
According to government officials, the two leaders will discuss the prospects for deepening and systematizing cooperation in the energy sector, at a time when Athens’ compass remains stable in the direction of the diversification of energy sources (and mainly natural gas) and energy security, with movements that have developed in the past.
At the same time, government officials, while waiting for the talks in Doha, remind that Qatar is one of the most important LNG suppliers in the world and for this reason, as they note, the Prime Minister’s visit can open a window of cooperation, in order for Greece to be energy transfer bridge from Qatar to the whole of Europe, but also an entry gate, through Revythoussa station, as well as the new Alexandroupolis station.
In addition to energy issues, which will be at the forefront of discussions in Doha, the Prime Minister and Emir of Qatar will also focus on regional and international developments. “Qatar is a country that plays an important role in the region, maintaining communication channels and close relations with important…players,” sources say.
