K. Mitsotakis on CNN: We will not proceed with a lockdown

“The only way to keep society and the economy open is to vaccinate. We are not going to go into a lockdown,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in an interview with CNN and Christian Amanpour.

Speaking about his decision to introduce compulsory vaccination for citizens over 60, the Prime Minister pointed out that “since then there has been a significant increase in appointments for the first dose of this age group.”

Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed that his government likes to take precautionary measures and the obligation of vaccination is the “last resort” estimating that until January 16, when the administrative fine of 100 euros per month enters into force the majority of citizens over 60 will have decided to protect themselves and their families. “I’m a liberal politician, I do not like obligation from the beginning, however, I think we made the right decision, as soon as the O mutation appeared, about which we do not know much yet, we said that this is the right decision and we must make it now.” , noted characteristically Kyriakos Mitsotakis. He even referred to the expansion of testing, reiterating that before Christmas and after the New Year there will be two rounds of self-diagnostic tests for everyone, to identify asymptomatic patients and keep open, society and the economy.

Mr. Mitsotakis spoke again about a pandemic of the unvaccinated and stressed that in Greece limited reactions have been recorded in relation to what is happening in other countries of the European Union. Asked about this, the Prime Minister noted that in Greece we do not have a political consensus on the issue of the coronavirus pandemic and criticized the decision of the opposition to “politicize” the pandemic, as he characteristically said, referring to a “big mistake”.

On the Immigration Front on the occasion of the recent visit of Pope Francis to our country, but also his transfer to the Reception and Identification Center of Kara Tepe in Lesvos, Mr. Mitsotakis reaffirmed that “there has not been sufficient solidarity in EU in terms of burden sharing “emphasizing that” there are countries that consider that Immigration is not their problem “. The Prime Minister reiterated that Greece “protects its borders with respect for human rights” at a time when it is trying to neutralize the traffickers’ circuits, as he noted. “We are doing our best to save human lives in the Aegean every day. This means that we must work with our neighbors and in this case with Turkey. In the recent past, Turkey has tried to instrumentalize immigration. Now they have adopted different tactics and rightly so. “Uncontrolled migration, as happened in 2015, is not the solution and will not be tolerated by European public opinion,” said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
