The work of renovation

In the context of Corporate Social Responsibility, OPAP had undertaken the commitment to renovate the two most important, oldest and largest Pediatric University Hospitals in Greece. The renovation project was completed and 30 projects with a total area of 14,960 sq.m. were delivered, which include 23 nursing units of international standards with a capacity of 564 beds, central sterilization, central entrances, stairwells, etc.

Indicatively, some of the most important projects implemented in the two hospitals are:

– The complete reconstruction of the Central Sterilization unit at the “Agia Sofia” hospital, which had not been renovated for more than 50 years. Equipped with international standards, the new unit serves both hospitals, covering needs for which the involvement of other NSS units was needed, until recently.

– The complete modernization of the 2nd Pediatric Nursing Unit of the “Panagiotis and Aglaia Kyriakou” hospital, which contributes to the treatment of COVID-19 cases, thanks to its state-of-the-art infectious disease unit. This innovative unit features state-of-the-art negative pressure beds and automated systems.

– The renovation of the pediatric surgery units of the two hospitals, which are a reference point for pediatrics in Greece.

– The complete renovation of the Day Care Unit of the “Agia Sofia” hospital, which now has a world-class surgical complex and resuscitation ward.

– The creation of a state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which responds to the highest international data, at the “Panagiotis and Aglaia Kyriakou” hospital.

The inauguration ceremony of the pediatric hospitals was also attended by the Executive Chairman of OPAP SA Kamil Ziegler, the CEO of OPAP SA Jan Karas, the Deputy CEO of OPAP SA Odysseas Christoforou, the General Secretary of Health Services Ioannis Kotsiopoulos, the Deputy Commander “Agia Sofia” Giannis Pavlou, the Deputy Commander “P. & A. The following is the full speech of the Prime Minister:

Minister, Deputy Minister, dear Karel, ladies and gentlemen,

It is really a great pleasure for me to be present today at the completion of a very important donation.

A donation, which began eight years ago, when the then Hospital Management, in collaboration with the Ministry, spoke with OPAP and proposed to the company a long-term plan to renovate all the infrastructure of the two largest Pediatric Hospitals in the country.

It took eight years to get to where we are today and a lot of effort from everyone involved.

I want to thank each and every one of them individually. As you can see, it is not easy to renovate a hospital on the go – we see the two hospitals as a whole – which are and must be in constant operational readiness.

However, we managed to deliver two state-of-the-art hospitals to our parents, children, young patients and employees today. Those who spoke before spoke about the important interventions that have been made, we are talking about two hospitals with a total capacity of 564 beds, which now have the infrastructure they deserve. And of course they have the colors and the joy, which must be exuded by a space that is addressed to our most sensitive fellow citizens, the children.

I do not think, as the Minister said, that there has been a parent – including me – who has not brought his child to one of our two major Pediatric Hospitals. And I think we all remember what the image of these hospitals was before the renovation and what the image of these hospitals is today.

We are therefore implementing, in cooperation with the private sector, our commitment to provide quality infrastructure for our patients, but also for the employees who offer their services to the National Health System.

This effort is an ongoing effort. We have significant resources from the Recovery Fund, in order to intervene in the basic hospital infrastructure of the country.

But I will emphasize that we will continue our cooperation with the private sector, which helped the National Health System during the difficult years of the Covid pandemic and will continue to help as we continue this effort to modernize the National Health System. .

I would like to congratulate OPAP again for this important donation. Large companies realize that they have an obligation to return to society a significant social dividend.

It is not just a formal obligation in the context of Corporate Social Responsibility, I think that all modern companies understand their role in this difficult situation which we must all understand, differently than they did in the past.

And I am sure that OPAP, as one of the largest Greek companies, will continue this program of Corporate Social Responsibility with even greater enthusiasm, especially now that it has realized how much added value it could add to our two Pediatric Hospitals.

So again, thank you to OPAP for this important donation. Congratulations to all those who worked to bring it to fruition.

And of course let me make one final thought: Infrastructure is very important. But without the staff of hospitals, they can not make a difference on their own.

The Ministry of Health is committed and has made significant investments in the human resources of the National Health System. Obviously, these will continue with the new competition for the permanent positions of doctors and nurses in the National Health System.

And where there are shortages, as there may be shortages in both of our Pediatric Hospitals, the Ministry will always rush to cover them as soon as possible.

So again, thank you. I look forward to being guided with great enthusiasm to the new infrastructure that you have renovated. And to wish higher ones as well.

Thank you very much.
