K. Mitsotakis: The trauma of every woman is the trauma of every society, every country

“International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is a symbolic occasion to face a long-standing problem. To realize that this is happening behind closed doors. And to break them along with the silence that surrounds it. Because every woman’s trauma is the trauma of every society, every country “, says in his message the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

He emphasizes, “With the #MeToo movement, many women have found the courage to come forward and denounce their perpetrators. However, many are still hesitant. We call on them to find the courage to address the authorities. Do not bow down. head, enduring violent acts and behaviors, they will have our support, as well as that of the entire Greek society.

But wish lists are not enough. Specific initiatives are required from the State. And we undertake them with courage: We have already activated, for two years now, 73 Special Services for Combating Domestic Violence of the Greek Police. Numerous police officers have been specially trained for the proper management of such incidents while today we are launching one of the six pilot units for the management of domestic violence incidents in Alimos.

We ensure that victims have access to the national SOS Line 15900 on a continuous and 24-hour basis, in order to seek help and to have immediate information and response instructions.

We operate 43 Counseling Centers throughout Greece, where the women who are tested find social, psychological and legal support. And 19 Hostels become their safe havens. Thanks to special programs of OAED, abused women also find work support.

Finally, we equip Justice with the necessary legal framework to punish the perpetrators and justify the victims. The new Penal Code now provides for ex-officio prosecution and stricter penalties for crime.

And we are at the beginning. We will insist. We will encourage. We will act. Because as long as women are in danger, our Democracy and Culture will be in danger “.
