K. Mitsotakis: To take extraordinary measures against possible sharp increases in energy prices

The need to take urgent measures to support Member States in the face of possible sharp increases in energy prices was reiterated by the Prime Minister at the extraordinary Summit convened by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, on the latest developments in Russia.

He added: “In this way we will be able to protect ourselves from a possible blackmail by the Russian side and show that we remain steadfast in defending international law and international legitimacy.”

As K. Mitsotakis said, “we are facing a development that until recently seemed unthinkable, the largest military invasion of an independent country since World War II” and at the same time stressed that what is happening in Ukraine does not simply violate international law, question the whole of Europe’s architectural security.

That is why, he continued, and the EU’s response will be extremely dynamic. We are here together to take decisions on harsh sanctions against Russia, we are here to demand the cessation of all hostilities as soon as possible, the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, to ensure the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

At the same time, we are here to prepare, to build our defense against developments that may affect European economies.
