JY Park is a South Korean artist and entrepreneur known both for his music career and for having founded, in 1997, JYP Entertainment, the home of giants in the K-Pop industry such as TWICE, Stray Kids and ITZY.
The mogul chose São Paulo among the cities for his “Dance With JYPark” tour, a challenge in which he dances alongside several fans and which brought together more than 3,000 people at Parque da Independência on October 22nd. In addition to South Korea and Brazil, the other participating countries were Thailand, Spain and the United States.
“It’s my first time in South America,” he told CNN. “There are thousands of reasons why I love Brazil, but above all, it’s because of the support our fans show us. The love and support you give us is encouraging. Thank you very much.”
Check out the interview:
His tour goes through several countries. What has been your favorite memory so far?
Among the cities I travel to for this tour, there are two countries I’ve never visited before: Spain and Brazil. And in Spain, I didn’t know how many fans would show up and there were more than 1,200 people. I was very surprised by the passion, love and support. So it was surprising, an impressive experience.
And you mentioned bossa nova. Do you like Brazilian artists?
First, Joao Gilberto. And also Tom Jobim and Nara Leão. The song they sing, “Chega de Saudade”, is so… You can listen to it thousands of times. If you listen to the last song I wrote for TWICE, called “Alcohol-Free”, you definitely feel “Chega de Saudade” in it. The rhythm, the emotion behind it.
I started out liking “Garota de Ipanema”, but then I discovered that there was a version of João Gilberto singing, and then I discovered a version of Nara Leão singing. That’s how I got to know more bossa nova and started to fall in love with the musical genre.
You mentioned TWICE and I know you wrote songs for them. One is very special for the fans, the “Feel Special”. How was it to compose this song?
I’ve written more than six hundred songs in the last 30 years, so it’s not easy to come up with a new song because I’ve already talked about everything about my life, about our lives. But every time a real situation motivates me, it’s very easy to write a special song.
At that time, Sana was going through a difficult situation and I saw how the other members supported her and it touched my heart. I wrote the song in honor of their friendship. After I finished the song, I wrote the lyrics on a piece of paper, framed it and gave it to Sana.
Recently, in a interview with Billboardmost of the members said that this is their favorite song of all time.
swear? Wow, OK. Nice. Because it was real, it was very real.
On CNN, while there are K-Pop fans watching, there are also people who still don’t know what K-Pop is. How would you explain what it is to this audience that still doesn’t know much about the subject?
It is a consensual form of entertainment. It’s really about enjoying music and dancing together, artist and fan together, communicating together, dancing together, singing together, promoting together. Like never before. This is possible because of the digital technology that has been developed in our society. Without digital platforms, K-Pop would not exist. K-Pop would not have existed.
And you once commented that the next step for K-Pop is globalization through localization. Can you explain what that means?
When I started producing and creating groups, they were all Korean, like the Wonder Girls. And when I saw a global reaction… You told me yourself that you heard “Nobody”.
I heard!
In what city?
Rio Branco, Acre. In the middle of the Amazon region, there was a girl listening to Wonder Girls.
And you’re sitting with the person who wrote that song right now. But, in the end, I saw this possibility. So I started mixing other nationalities in the groups, like Nichkhun in 2 PM, BamBam in GOT7. That was the second step, and then the third was non-Korean artist groups like BOY STORY and NiziU in Japan.
And for A2K, the project I’m filming right now, I selected members to go to a bootcamp [treinamento] and it’s amazing. It will be an explosion. The girls are very talented and there are so many star potentials in America. It’s just going to be American girls and my next goal is in Latin America, like South America.
And will there be Brazilians?
Yes, yes, this is the next project I have in mind. That’s why I wanted to come here to see you and feel the energy. I think it will give me an idea for my next project, after the Japanese, Chinese and American projects. It will be a Latin project based in South America. And I’m going to travel around the cities of South America doing auditions on this continent. It’s going to be crazy.
Can you send a message to Brazilian fans?
Wow. Thank you very much. I really know how much love and support you guys are sending us. It’s exciting. I will do my best to repay you. My visit to Brazil is just the beginning, I promise you will see more of me and our artists in the future.
