K-pop: South Korea Court prevents Newjeans group from leaving agency

A South Korean court issued an injunction on Friday (21) to prevent members of the K-Pop Newjeans group from carrying out independent projects, marking the latest turnaround in a longtime dispute between the stars and their label that has held the attention of fans.

The Central District Court of Seul has accepted a loader’s request to maintain their role in group management and ban Newjeans from engaging in commercial activities without the consent of the label, the court said in a statement.

The five Newjeans members announced their departure from the ador last November, revealed a new name – NJZ – and promised to release a new song this month.

Friday’s decision seems to question this and the group said it would dispute the court’s decision.

“NJZ respects the court’s decision. However, we believe the decision did not fully take into account the complete break of confidence that members experienced in relation to the ador,” they said in an Instagram post.

Newjeans was caught in internal quarrels between executives of the agency’s controller and the band’s creative director, who now left the love.

The K-Pop controversy involving Newjeans generated a series of headlines in South Korea and beyond last year, with flying accusations, audits and an emotional press conference.

Members said they want to work with the creative director, accusing the abuse company. The ador denied such allegations and said the contract remains in force.

Ador is a subsidiary of the powerful Hybe record label, home to another global sensation of K-Pop, BTS.

Ador thanked the court for his “judicious” decision.

“With our status of Newjeans exclusive agency now legally confirmed, we are totally committed to supporting the artists in the future,” the company said in a statement, adding that it will be present at the presentation of members on Sunday in Hong Kong.
