K. Sakellaropoulou: A promising tomorrow stands out for Thrace

“It promises a very promising tomorrow for Thrace thanks to the indomitable will and hard work of the Thracians”, pointed out the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou who continues the refugee journey, which began on Holy Thursday from Ptelea, in the Triangle of Evros, today visited Nea Kessani and Mandra in the prefecture of Xanthi.

“In the few days that I was in Thrace following a refugee route that was carved a hundred years ago, I experienced intensely the place and its people. I met the past, which survives alive in the hearts of its inhabitants, I felt the wounds left by the wars. immigration, the abandonment of the countryside, and I saw, with joy, a very promising tomorrow, thanks to the indomitable will and hard work of the Thracians.

“Happy Resurrection!”, Said Mrs. Sakellaropoulou.

The President of the Republic began the third day of her tour in Thrace with a visit to Nea Kessani in the prefecture of Xanthi, a village founded by refugees.

There she was welcomed by the mayor of Abdera George Tsitiridis, the president of the Community Zoe Bourlouka and the president of the Cultural Association Thomas Koutaliou.

The President of the Republic visited the Cultural Association and was guided to the pyrography exhibition of Dimitris Detsaridis, on “pyrography in 1821”. Mr. Detsaridis reserved a surprise for Ms. Sakellaropoulou by giving her a pyrograph depicting the station of Stavroupoli (place of origin), the grandfather with her cousin, from an old photo, and the same from her visit to Stavroupoli in 2020 .

Ms. Sakellaropoulou met with villagers who applauded her while exchanging wishes for Easter.

He was guided in an exhibition of photography and traditional costumes at the Cultural Association and wrote in the guest book: “The cultural association of Nea Kessani preserves the refugee memory and passes it on to the younger generations. Thrace as an example of endurance and creativity.”

Immediately after, the President of the Republic visited the village of Mandra in the prefecture of Xanthi, where she was welcomed by the President of the Community Anastasios Chalkopoulos and the President of the Cultural Association Panagiotis Bardakis.

Ms. Sakellaropoulou met with residents and visited the Cultural Association.

At the Creative Workshop he met with young people and discussed with them the difficulties they face in both learning and career guidance and employment. A major difficulty, as the young people said, is the lack of computers. The case of a student who wants to study computer science and has not even touched a computer was mentioned.

Ms. Sakellaropoulou became aware and said that the Presidency of the Republic will immediately donate a computer to the Laboratory.

He met with elementary school students who are constantly building boats, which symbolize the way in which refugees from Asia Minor came. Their goal is to reach 890, who were the first refugees to arrive in Mandra.

He also took a tour of the refugee culture exhibition and the lending library.
