K. Simitis: The Modern Social Democracy must respond with new words and vision to the challenges of the time

Applauded by the nearly 5,000 delegates, the former Prime Minister, Costas Simitis, took the podium at the 3rd PASOK-KINAL Congress. Addressing the whole range of the progressive faction, the former prime minister identified in his greeting the great modern challenges and the corresponding programmatic answers that a party of the modern Social Democracy must offer to the society. “The aim is for the progressive faction to present a comprehensive and integrated view of the society it seeks, which will include its individual goals, and to have a elaborate understanding of what reforms it is promising,” he said. Simitis argued: “A progressive party must offer interpretations of the dynamics that govern evolution, determine what realities it will face, speak the language of the time to an audience that seeks to understand what solutions are offered. His speech must be modern ”

He clearly described the context of the actions in which PASOK-Movement for Change must move as a left-wing party with social democratic principles. “It must form views on exploitation, alienation, the public, the private, humanity, freedom, equality, social justice in the new age; to add, to known values and ideas, new ones that better express its reality. to identify the new mechanisms of inequality that need to be tackled, but also to suggest new ways of achieving social cohesion and creating a fairer and freer society; to take into account the effects of climate change, of technological developments they create a new environment and the urgent need for research in order to deal effectively with the new developments “, said Mr. Simitis.

He also pointed out that the central obligation of PASOK-KINAL is “to acquire a creative dynamic, to re-determine decisively the path for more social justice, to ensure the necessary conditions for Greece to experience high growth rates and to respond effectively to the problems of participation.” in the European Union “.

He added that at the moment of the new beginning “success requires systematic work to understand problems and work out solutions”.

He also pointed out that he is not only tempted by the political controversy and the way in which he will expose his political opponents, which is common in politics but also how he will create an image of knowledge and aspirations. “The current authority must, of course, address the issue of better organization and joint action. But it must also pursue the most difficult issue, the elaboration of a convincing action plan to achieve a fairer society,” he said.

The former prime minister added that social phenomena need to be treated as elements of a system, which is the main goal of any reform intervention. “To intervene in what needs to change; to constantly ask questions; but also to commit to a vision free of illusions and prejudices. Social change is possible, but it does not mean the realization of another, visionary society,” he said. the need “to be a party of action, to intervene with its word but also with its mobilization in the information of the society, in the mobilization for the realization of social reforms, avoiding to react with general principles, vague solutions, it is a list of directions, for the citizens , politics that do not interest them.

“The work undertaken today is difficult but also necessary for the progress of the country. We must respond”, concluded Costas Simitis with applause.
