K. Skrekas: Europe to take steps with courage, realism and speed to deal with the energy crisis

The Minister of Environment and Energy, Costas Skrekas, spoke at the joint meeting of the Committees on European Affairs, Production and Trade and Environmental Protection, which was attended by EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson.

Mr. Skrekas pointed out, among other things, the following:

International energy crisis

– The Government has allocated 2.5 billion euros and an additional 800 million euros to PPC to mitigate the effects of the energy crisis on citizens and businesses.

– The magnitude of the crisis is beyond the capabilities of the Member States and requires courageous and decisive responses at European level.

That is why the Prime Minister presented in March a comprehensive set of six key points for restoring the smooth functioning of European energy markets.

– Since last September we have submitted to the Council of Energy Ministers a specific proposal for the utilization of future revenues from CO2 auctions to finance a European mechanism to support consumers, especially the most vulnerable.

RES penetration

– Greece is the country with the greatest acceleration in terms of green transition.

– In 2020 the installed capacity of RES increased by 1 GW, compared to just 330 MW in 2018.

– In 2021, IPTO provided bids for a total capacity of 3 GW, compared to 801 MW in 2019.

– In 2021 the penetration of RES reached 1.5 GW and this year it will amount to 2 GW, with equal distribution between wind and photovoltaic.

– In 2022 the penetration of RES in the energy mix will increase by 8% and will reach 40% on average.

– A draft law on the simplification of the licensing of new RES projects will be put to public consultation next week.

– Provides, inter alia, the reduction of the total licensing time to 14 months from the current five years and the creation of an institutional framework for electricity storage projects.

– By June we introduce the legal framework for the development of offshore wind farms with an installed capacity of 2 GW by 2030.

– We systematically transform our country into a hub of green energy, with new electrical interconnections with neighboring countries, such as Bulgaria, Egypt, Cyprus and Israel.

– For the carbonization of our islands, we are working with the EIB on a contract that will release more than 1.5 billion euros for green energy and infrastructure. A total of 3.5 billion euros will be mobilized for the carbonization of the islands.

Adequacy of supply

– We are immediately launching the expansion of the capacity of the LNG gasification station in Revythousa with the addition of a fourth floating warehouse.

– This is an investment that can increase the storage capacity from 225,000 to over 350,000 sq.m. per day.

– We are considering the increase of the gasification rate at the Revythousa station by 12% to cover the peaks of natural gas demand.

– We are shielding the country energetically with the creation of new LNG stations in Corinth and Alexandroupolis.

– We promote the storage of gas in Italy for the maintenance of strategic reserve and the submarine storage in Kavala in which we will seek compatibility with hydrogen.

– We are considering increasing gas flows from Azerbaijan through TAP.

– DEPA is ready to order additional LNG loads if needed.

– PPC has prepared an annual plan for lignite mining and its availability in the yards of factories.

– We are ready to operate with diesel five power plants with natural gas of 1.7 GW.
