By Haris Fludopoulos

According to the European Commission, Greece is one of the 3 EU member states. which face the least risk of energy security, said the Minister of Environment and Energy K. Skrekas, speaking at the Economist conference.

The minister referred to the possibilities that Greece has to replace Russian gas, mentioning the LNG imports, the operation of the 5 gas units with diesel fuel, the increase in lignite production and the new Ptolemaida lignite unit that will operate in the fall.

Mr. Skrekas said that by the end of the month, the new FSU floating natural gas storage tank in Revythoussa is expected to be put into operation. The upgrade of the storage capacity of Revythousa in combination with the FSRU of Alexandroupolis, upgrades the import capacity of Greece to 15 billion. cubic meters, a fact that will allow the country’s energy sufficiency to be ensured, as well as exports to neighboring countries.

As Mr. Skrekas said, exports to Bulgaria are already taking place, reaching up to 80% of the country’s total consumption.

The energy minister noted that the energy sector in Greece is in a phase of transformation and estimated that our country can play the role of a hub not only for energy security but also for green energy. In this direction, interconnection projects with neighboring countries and with Egypt are of particular importance. As Mr. Skrekas said, the doubling of the interconnection capacity with Albania is being implemented, while the same will be done with Italy by the end of the decade. Also, the Greece-Egypt interconnection will allow the transfer of green energy to Greece and Europe. Finally, Mr. Skrekas mentioned that the IGB pipeline is expected to start operating by the end of the month, providing energy security to the neighboring country.
