K. Skrekas: on ‘European scissors’: ‘Greece has foreseen, Europe has delayed’

Greece remains opposed to the Commission’s proposal for a horizontal mandatory reduction of 15% in natural gas for all member states, as Costas Skrekas pointed out to SKAI, assuring at the same time that there is sufficiency, however the government is vigilant due to war.

As the Minister of Energy and Environment assured, with the measures that have been taken, there is sufficient natural gas in the event of a total outage.

“We have already proceeded with interventions in the consumption of natural gas, we disagree with the horizontal and mandatory reduction by 15% for all member states without considering the special conditions without this having an effect in the northernmost countries,” the Minister of Energy emphasized.

“Greece has foreseen, Europe has delayed, it is unfair” he said characteristically. “Spain, Italy, France, Poland, Belgium have problems, not just us,” explained Kostas Skrekas.

“The proposal has not been discussed with the member states, we disagree with the way it has been studied, and it does not prove that it is the most effective way to help the northernmost countries in the event that Russia cuts off natural gas,” he stressed.

“We offer our solidarity very much through our infrastructure in Bulgaria with LNG (liquefied natural gas). Greece exports electricity to Italy and natural gas to Bulgaria,” he explained.

As the Minister of Energy mentioned, Greece is going through a tourist season this year with record arrivals or record revenues even compared to 2019 we have growth above the European average, the steel mills, cement factories, factories and trade are working and this has increased consumption in relation to the compared years which the Commission says are the m.o. of the last five years with low consumptions and low activity.

“The 15% they say for Greece, and for Italy and other countries, means a 24% – 25% reduction in natural gas,” he clarified.

“We have exhausted every possibility to shield our country’s energy security and supply even in the most unfavorable scenario, but we are at war,” Mr. Skrekas noted.
